How to make a DIY bag

Step 1: Main Body

You can make this lovely bag structure only by the fold and cut technique. First, fold the fabric in half and cut it along the pattern. Remember to leave a seam allowance of ¼ inch.

Cut the main pieces along the pattern

Make another piece of the exact same size.

Make 2 main pieces

Fold the medium-weighted interfacing in half. Cut it along the same fold pattern. But this time, there’s no need to leave any seam allowance.

Therefore, the interfacing pieces will be smaller than the main pieces. Repeat this technique once again to have two interfacing pieces.

Cut 2 interfacing pieces

Attach the interfacing pattern to the wrong side of the main piece. Iron carefully to make these two pieces stick to each other. Do it again and now you will have two main pieces attached to the interfacings.

Iron the pieces

Prepare a 3’’ x 27’’ fabric and attach it with the interfacing by ironing.

Fold it in half 2 times and use a ruler to sketch your cutting lines.

Draw 2 slight diagonal lines

Cut along the lines you sketched.

It will look like this when you unfold the fabric.

Finally, use your sewing machine to attach this fabric to two main pieces you have made earlier to form the body structure.

Step 2: Lining Body

In this second step, we are going to do the same as the main fabric but we don't have to attach it to the interfacing.

Here is the comparison:

Step 3: Bag Assembly

You will need two 3’’ x 5’’ fabric pieces.

Then, attach each piece into a pocket-shaped thing and turn it inside out. Tuck its edges inside.

After that, stitch it to the zipper. Do it again with the other side.

Next, cut two 5" x 2,5" pieces.

Fold its edge and fold the pieces in half. Then, iron carefully and use the sewing machine to make them stick together.

Thread each piece through a wooden ring and sew its edge.

Attach the zipper and the wooden ring pieces into the main and lining body.

Once you finish, turn the whole bag inside out.

Step 4: Scrunchie Strap

Last but not least, let’s move on to make the scrunchie strap.

Fold a 20” x 2,5” fabric as shown to make our strap.

The bag strap

Fold 3”x36” fabric in half and attach its edge with the safety pin. Next, thread the elastic through the tube. Once you’ve pulled it all over, remove the pin. Thread it through the wooden ring. Finally, sewing it all together is the last step.
